In 2005, executives from five noted, independent consulting firms from around the world gathered to discuss problems and solutions they shared. Each company had a solid history of successfully helping clients to identify, understand and maximize corporate assets to achieve improved performance. Though each firm focused on a distinct type of asset, together they realized they represented the full spectrum of improving performance, from tangible assets (like business valuation and tax risk management) to intangible assets (like M&A, Human Capital and Executive Coaching and development). As these executives met, they came to recognize the common goal they shared; they all focused on helping companies leverage their "hidden" assets (i.e., assets they already possessed) to drive performance and create more profits from within. However, like the popular fable of the blind men and the elephant, they realized that each of them only focused on a single, isolated, dimension of the much larger entity known as "the company". Only by pooling their unique perspectives could they truly provide the holistic solution their clients needed. With this revelation, they decided to meld their half-century of combined experience into a single, all-encompassing approach to understanding any organization's total performance potential.
